He was one of three children and moved to Savannah, Georgia at the age five. Robert’s family was Jewish but did not attend any of the Savannah synagogues. Instead, his family found community in the Workmen’s Circle, a nonprofit organization that powers Jewish identity through Jewish cultural engagement, Yiddish language learning, and social justice activism. Robert’s grandfather, William Scheer, founded the Savannah branch of the organization, and Robert grew up attending meetings. He also attended Yiddish school through the organization, rather than traditional Hebrew school. Robert graduated from Savannah High School in 1951 before going on to study sociology and political theory at Clark University. He then obtained a PhD from the University of Connecticut before becoming a sociology professor. He taught at both Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio and Iona College in New Rochelle, New York while also serving as a college administrator. Robert then describes his deep admiration for his grandfather and how he was influential in the development of the Arbeter Ring Workmen’s Circle branch in Savannah. Robert explains that many of his beliefs and philosophies stem from his grandfather, who was a Socialist and did not practice traditional Judaism. He recounts attending Yiddish school through the Workmen’s Circle in his youth, rather than traditional Hebrew school. Robert also recalls making the choice to attend Workmen’s Circle meetings as he grew older. This, coupled with the fact that he did not grow up in any of the major synagogues in Savannah, isolated him from the rest of the Jewish community. Robert goes on to explain, however, that he began to feel more connected to the Jewish community as he entered his teen years and began to be involved in clubs such as AZA and the Boy Scouts. He describes two of his greatest life experiences, attending Tel Yehudah camp and visiting Israel, both of which were funded by the Jewish Educational Alliance in Savannah. Robert closes the interview by explaining that he always knew he would return to Savannah as an adult due to his desire to improve Jewish and black relations in the community.
