I work for the Union for Reform Judaism [URJ] as the\nSoutheast Teen Mentor and Program Manager. And that job required me to relocate.\nAnd truthfully, I had been looking into leaving Florida and actually moving to\nAtlanta for quite some time. So,\nwhat was your experience like as a camper? Did that, how did that experience\nstrengthen your Jewish culture or your identity or your faith? So, you know, camp for me wasn't necessarily a place where I felt like I\nhad to go to have a connection to my Judaism. I was very involved in my\nsynagogue. I grew up going to religious school. I was very involved with youth\ngroup. I\nhad bar mitzvahs attending like every weekend. So camp wasn't necessarily a\nplace where I felt like I had to go to expand on my Judaism. But it was an\nopportunity that I had that I got to add to my Jewish journey if that makes\nsense. So, I absolutely loved my experience as a camper. I have friends that,\nyou know, I'm still friends with. And it always kind of blew my mind, right? And so, I had friends growing up who were from very, very\nsmall communities who they were the only Jewish person in their school or, you\nknow, they had a couple of people that went to their religious school, but\notherwise it was just them. And to me, I couldn't even fathom that was like,\n\"What do you mean you're the only one? NFTY STR is the Southern Tropical Region. And so that is really\nlike Jacksonville [Florida], south in Florida. We currently work with F. L. Stanton Elementary. It's been\ndifferent schools and different organizations in the past, but for the past, I\nwant to say 11 or so years we've been partnering with F. L. And like I said, it's\nrun, we have a teen leader, a co-director from NFTY SAR and a co-director from\nNFTY STR. And so, I work with them directly and they put on the program, they do\nthe planning, they do the recruitment. They hire. They put out the applications\nfor all of our teen staff and all of the counselors, the specialists are all\nteens, of course, with adult partnership and mentorship. And so actually just yesterday we had\nour annual Day of Giving where we had a goal of raising $10,000 in one day and\nour teens went above and beyond, and we actually raised over $16,000 in one day\nto be able to put on this program. So, it's incredibly life changing for the\ncampers that we get to work with, they're kindergarten through fifth grade. And so it was, you know, you've experienced a lot, you've\nexperienced not at all. We have a lot of our campers that come where they might be the only\nJewish person in their school. Is it you know, is it funny and self-deprecating humor or\ndoes it give permission to other people to make those same jokes but in a\nharsher, more aggressive way? I will have that\nconversation with them.\" And so, you know, it's interesting and sad and also\nuplifting to hear our young people feel so passionate about these issues and\nhear the work that they're doing. And it's something that I have a really big issue\nwith comedians. I love stand-up comedy. We hear it\nall the time. We hear these jokes, we hear these comments, and it almost just\nrolls right off your back. You don't even bat an eye. You don't even turn to it\nanymore because it's so all around us, right? We have these celebrities who are\nposting these horrific comments and statements. We don't continue the fight, continue to have the conversation,\ncontinue to push through, and we just let it kind of roll right off our backs\nand say, \"Oh, well, you know, of course, so-and-so is going to do this. Of\ncourse, so-and-so is going to do that.\" Well, no, why are we not holding them to\na higher standard? And for some reason, when something happens in the Jewish\ncommunity, the only people I see that are making these stands and having these\nconversations are other Jews.
