When I moved to Atlanta, somebody had said there was an opening at the American Jewish Committee [AJC]. I had met Sherry Frank who was the director of AJC through NCJW. In fact, we were on a panel together many, many years ago so we had this connection. I actually think it may have been Susan Feinberg who said, \"you should contact Sherry; she would like you to interview.\" I did. She was looking for a new assistant director. I got that job and worked there for five years. Then there was a position open at The Temple. I interviewed there. It was really very much the same group of people who were at AJC and The Temple. I got that job and stayed for 25 years until I retired about nine, ten years ago. I’m still active as a volunteer at The Temple and, of course, NCJW. As I met them or learned to study with them, I'd say, “I'm going to call you to come to The Temple.\" People loved coming to The Temple, it's a very prestigious synagogue, and so it wasn't hard to get good scholars to come. When Rabbi [Jeffrey] Salkin came, he had just learned of a program called Synaplex. He brought it to me and he said, \"I really want to do this\". The concept, it was a great concept, nearly killed me, but it was a great concept . . . was to, on a Shabbat to have multi-programs going on simultaneously to bring people of all ages and stages into the synagogue. We got a grant from The Marcus Foundation to do Synaplex in a very, very big way. My chairperson and I went to a training session in Dallas [Texas]. At that point, we had already done one program and there was another one coming up. I learned quickly that I could not do these every month unless I did nothing else. It was that much planning. There was always . . . we’d bring in also some superstar, often a musical person. There was always a dinner. There were all these sometimes-multiple worship services and breakout groups: a study group, a learning of . . . cooking group, or something. We did Synaplex and it was a wonderful success. People came by in droves for Synaplex. The concept being, you go to a Synaplex movie theater, this was S-Y-N, not C, and you have your choices. The idea was you come to Temple and you had your choices, and you could even come at the end of the evening. There was usually entertainment at the end of evening. I'm still active in all of those organizations. I’m still, after 25 years of doing programming at The Temple, I'm a program vice president for the NCJW section here, and that keeps me pretty busy. I have two co-chairs, thank goodness. I said I would do it for a year, and after a year they asked me, would I train the next person? I stayed on a second year and then she said, she was so wonderful or is wonderful, and she said, \"Would you stay on one more year with me?” I did that. I promise this was my last, now my last year. It's on tape, that makes it so. I take a Melton class at The Temple every Monday morning with Shelley Buxbaum, she’s my teacher. I've done that for years. She's taught this Monday morning class for years and years while I was still working there. She'd always stop in and say, “Come to class, come to the class.” By the time I look up from my job, work, class was over. But when I retired, I said to her, now I'm going to really come to class, and I've done it ever since. I'm there every Monday morning. I'm a docent, so I do tours. We have an enormous amount of school groups, retirement homes, other synagogues, out of town groups that, we do a lot of tours of The Temple. That’s a fun thing to do, I really like that. With American Jewish Committee, I step in and out of whatever they're working on at the time that interests me. I might be on a committee. I don't take a chairmanship or anything like that there. It's just whatever is happening, whether it's Jewish or non-Jewish. I love Symphony, I have season tickets there. Some days I feel like I’m bored and I don't have enough to do, which is true. I think that a lot of retirees go through this balance. It’s hard. Other days I’ll think, oh my gosh. When I first retired, I started saying yes to everything people ask me because I was nervous about filling my time. Then I realized I was saying yes too much, and I didn't have my own kind of personal time. I cut back.
