Yet, on the other end, we have a large part of the population who are growing up…children growing up in poverty and, with not very much hope. HONIGBERG: I have thought about it. Having four children, how would I feel, if one of them wanted to marry someone who is not Jewish? I have to say that my choice would be that they would find someone that they loved and was going to be their soulmate and partner for life, who was Jewish. It would make it so much easier in terms of Jewish traditions and carrying that on, but I also realize that it's very difficult and…to find someone who's just right for you. That I would rather that if they meet someone who is the right person for them, that even if they were not Jewish, I would welcome them and hope that they could find their way in raising their children, that would be okay, that hopefully they would raise them as Jews. I know in our congregation, we've had many mixed marriages, and I've seen some where the spouse was not Jewish and either converted or didn't convert, but was supportive, of their children growing up in the synagogue. These were beautiful families, and I observed that their children, some of them grew up and married Jewish people and others did not, just like any other family these days. I don't look at that as really a crisis. I can understand how the rabbi feels. I think the crisis is a little bit…maybe a little bit deeper, and that is, are people finding enough in their Judaism? Are young people finding that it's meaningful enough that it really matters to them whether they're Jewish, whether their children are Jewish or not? I think that Judaism, and organized Judaism probably needs to do a better job, at bringing Judaism…presenting Judaism in a way that these young people find that is important to them.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/130236/file/243606#t=1742.0,1866.0"},{"id":"https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/130236/file/243606/transcript/81734/annotation/170","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"SPARER: That’s a good comment.
