He was active in Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scouts and the Order of the Arrow. He attended the first National Jamboree of the Boy Scouts in 1937. Philip worked for 47 years in the family wholesale drug company, Solomons Company where he became President and CEO.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eWhile at Georgia Tech, he met his future wife, Shirley Massell. They married on March 31, 1946, and had three sons, Philip Jr., Ralph, and Richard and five grandchildren. He was very active in various community activities including the Rotary Club, Savannah Benevolent, Association, and Boy Scouts. He and Shirley endowed The Philip and Shirley Solomons Eminent Scholar Chair in the Department of Economics at Armstrong College. In 2005, Philip and Shirley’s family founded the Solomons Family Fund at the Georgia Historical Society. I was over in Georgetown and tried to get some information about why, when, how, but I couldn't find a thing. One of his sons, A. A. [Abraham Alexander] Solomons came to Savannah in 1845, and that was the beginning of Solomons Company as a wholesale drug company . . . Having a wholesale drug company in Savannah with the Civil War and later on with the Depression was quite interesting. I wasn't around for the Civil War, but we have a very interesting document which gives you some idea about the conditions in Savannah after the Civil War. Confederate money wasn't any good. The economy was shot. We had some records showing where people out in the country who purchased from the store would make their payment in cotton. We also have a document that they took up to New York to request some leniency on the part of their major suppliers, people like Smith, Kline \u0026 French, Colgate-Palmolive, those kind of people, and they did. They gave the company one year of credit until they got back on their feet. Fortunately, they did. Another about that, well it was a little after that, and we hope it didn't aid Robert E. Lee's demise. But he was back in Savannah in 1870, 1871. We have a request from Lee for a prescription which he had sent to the drugstore. Of course, Lee died in 1871. We hope that didn't hurt. The reason I remember that one so well is coming up during the Depression, you didn't really have much money to play around with. Each summer I had a drink stand right in front of that little drug store. I also remember, particularly now with Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola wasn't a big deal then. The big one at that time was Nehi because it was the biggest. That's where I really got most of my spending money. I think it's about 1975, we purchased Columbia Drug Company. That's when the business really started taking off. We had a very strong franchise in Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. That continued for many years until the whole economy and the drug distribution business changed. Much of the business was being directed by these large hospital groups that a regional wholesaler was just closed out of too much business unless you could supply these organizations on a national basis. There was just no hope for you, so there's no real hope for continued growth. In 1973, we sold the business to Cardinal Health out of Dublin, Ohio. You asked about my first car. My first car, and I think the year is right, was a 1927 Essex. That was gotten specifically to get from home to Armstrong because the hours were different. One of the things that stands out in my mind though, the Essex had one of these plastic covers and in between the plastic and the frame was cotton, cotton batting. I picked up my mother downtown and it was the winter time and we were coming home and my mother looked outside of the car, and she says, \"I think it's snowing.\" [I said,] \"It can't be snowing it's clear\".
