He was one of seven children born to Abram Leyzer Visgardiski and Batya Chaya (Grinblatt) Visgardiski. The family later relocated to the nearby city of Kovno (Kaunas). In Kovno, Sam completed his schooling and was active in sports and Zionist organizations. Sam had begun serving two years of mandatory service in the Lithuanian army when the Soviets annexed Lithuania in 1940. At that point, he returned to Kovno, where life resumed a relatively normal routine until the Germans invaded in the summer of 1941.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eSam and his family were soon confined to the Kovno ghetto. When he went into the city on labor brigades, Sam traded clothing for food he then smuggled into the ghetto. In the ghetto, Sam met a young woman from Kovno named Ida (Chaja) Baron (1922-1995). Soon the two referred to themselves as married in an effort to avoid deportations and selections. In the ghetto, Sam witnessed the deportation and murder of numerous family members.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eIn the fall of 1943, the Kovno ghetto was converted into the Kauen concentration camp. In December, Sam and Ida were sent to the Schanzen subcamp, where they were forced to labor for various Wehrmacht installations. Then, as the Russian army advanced in July 1944, Kauen and its subcamps were evacuated. Ida was sent with all the other female prisoners to Stutthof concentration camp. Sam was sent with the other male prisoners to Dachau concentration camp in Germany. In Dachau, Sam reunited with one of his brothers, Isaac (1910-2002). They managed to stay together until April 1945, when Allied forces approached the camp.\u003cbr\u003eOn April 26, Isaac was sent on a death march toward the Alps, but Sam, critically ill, was left behind. When American forces liberated Dachau three days later, he was discovered barely alive in a pile of corpses and taken to a hospital. While recovering from years of starvation, exhaustion, and trauma, Sam learned Isaac had survived. The brothers were soon reunited in the hospital of the Sankt Ottilien Archabbey in Emming, Germany. Eventually, Sam learned that Ida, who had been transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau from Stutthof, had also survived. \u003cbr\u003eIsaac and Ida were reunited and married in the Feldafing DP camp near Munich, Germany on November 10, 1946. With the help of Isaac and Sam’s only surviving sibling—a sister who had immigrated to South Africa before the war—as well as Rachel’s extended relatives in the United States, both couples applied for visas to immigrate to the United States. While awaiting visas, they welcomed their first daughter.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eFinally, on November 9, 1949, the young family arrived in New York aboard the USS General M.B. Stewart. They settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where Isaac and his wife and children had settled a few months earlier. Isaac and Sam opened Wise Brothers Grocery. A few years later, Isaac opened his own grocery, Windsor Red Dot. Sam and Ida had another daughter in the United States and later had seven grandchildren. Sam and Isaac’s families remained very close and were members of Atlanta’s Ahavath Achim Synagogue. After Ida died in 1995, Sam became an active volunteer in Atlanta’s Jewish community and began sharing his story. From 1252-1923 and from 1939-1945, the city was called ‘Memel.’  After World War I the area was nominally an independent protectorate but was essentially under the control of Germany. In 1923, the Lithuanians forcibly annexed it and renamed the city ‘Klaipeda.’ In March 1939, Germany pressured Lithuania into returning it to them. On March 20, 1939, after years of increased tensions between the two nations, Germany issued an ultimatum demanding Lithuania give up the Klaipeda region, which had been detached from Germany following World War I. The demand came just five days after Germany had occupied Czechoslovakia. With no support from other nations and under the threat of German invasion, Lithuania complied with the demand.
