I needed to do something for myself. Throughout my marriage, I tried to do things. I know I worked for Steve some and he taught me, I know how to prepare tax returns, so I did that. Then every time I would have a major career opportunity, not career, volunteer opportunity, like I chaired the General Assembly in 1982, and then I chaired the women's campaign for the [Jewish] Federation. When I did that, I got to take a leave of absence, so that became my professional job . . . Then I went, when Parisian opened in Atlanta, my dad was associated with it, and I talked to the president. I was able to work there for five years in charge of customer and community relations, which really was nothing because they didn't give me any money to give away. But everybody in the community thought I had money, and so I was able to access a lot of different organizations that weren't Jewish, which I really enjoyed learning about new organizations. After that position ended, I thought, as Steve and I talked about it and I said, \"You know what . . .\" He said, \"What do you want to do?\" I said, \"I think I'm kind of good at events. Maybe I should start an event business.\" That's what I did. It just so happened in 1998 or I was at the grand opening of Nordstrom's at Perimeter. It was benefiting the YWCA. I went, and the head of the Atlanta Women's Fund, it was the fund. It was part of the Community Foundation at the time said to me, \"I heard you're not working. Do you want to do an event for me?\" . . . She says, \"If you do, call me.\" That's how it started. I started doing her events, three or four year, and she actually taught me a lot. The Federation had taught me a lot because our . . . it's not just that we're event planners. We help with the fundraising and everything that goes into a nonprofit event . . . I was in business for, I think, over 25 years. Then in 2023 or the end of 2022, I had an associate that had been with me since, for 20 years. She . . . started out at ORT as a development director, and she was an amazing writer . . . She would work with me. She would write scripts . . . We worked together. In the nonprofit world, as you probably know, the salary is not great. I could not charge my nonprofit clients like if I worked for a corporate, I couldn't do it. I said to her, \"I can't pay you what you need to live on.\" She also wrote grants. I said, \"Just keep writing grants, keep growing that business. I don't care. You do that and you work for me.\" That's what happened. At the end of 2022, I said to her, \"I think I don't want to have to go to these events anymore. I'd rather do what I like to do. Here you take the business, it's yours.\" Then we decided that we would take my half of the business and GrantScribes, which was her half of the business, and merged them together and that's Alloy Fundraising. The whole metaphor is that when you have two metals and you put them together, they're stronger. That's what we are. She is growing the business, especially on the grant side. She has grant writers all over the world. That's what happened. Now I do what I want to do, which is coming up with creative ideas for a program or thinking through the fundraising part strategically. He was the head of the Young Leadership Cabinet for men, and his wife was working for women. She asked me if I would consider being on the cabinet. I think I was 26 years old, actually. I said, \"Yes, I would love to.\" She called Atlanta, and the Atlanta Professional for Women's Division said, \"We have lots of women that are leaders, but that I wasn't one of them.\" This is what happened when I moved to Atlanta, because I come from a family that was always involved. It was founded at the end of the eighteenth century in 1880 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Active in over 100 countries, today, ORT is the world’s largest Jewish education and vocational training NGO (Non-Governmental Organization). After World War II, ORT was very active in the DP camps, opening schools with rehabilitation programs in 78 camps. The purpose of the schools was to train and prepare DPs (displaced persons) for resettlement in industrialized countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia as well as Israel, which had a significant need for highly trained manpower. Some 85,000 Jews were trained in new professions and provided with the tools they needed to rebuild their lives. In 2003 Israel was the area of ORT's largest operation, with 90,000 students educated or trained at ORT’s 159 schools, colleges, and institutions, educating 25 percent of Israel’s hi-tech workforce. In 2006 ORT Israel withdrew from World ORT. World ORT continues to work in Israel under the name of Kadima Mada (Educating for Life). In December 1946, the first ORT trade school in Austria was opened in Vienna. By the end of 1947, additional schools were open in Ebelsberg, Steyr, Wels, Salzburg, Hofgastein, Hallein, Linz, and Bindermilch. The schools conducted programs in 50 trades ranging from dressmaking to technical chemistry, optics and building trades. English and Hebrew language courses were also held. ORT’s Central School in Salzburg was the first post-war vocational training establishment in Austria. It opened in February 1947 and had 350 students by mid-1947. An annex to the main ORT school in Salzburg opened in 1948 in the Beth Bialik transit camp in Salzburg and another school was located in the Riedenburg camp. As emigration progressed, ORT schools in Austria began closing down. The Salzburg school was transferred to Hallein, a DP camp twenty miles from Salzburg, in 1947, and it remained open until 1954. It has now evolved to provide 21st century technology to Jewish communities worldwide.
