In 2008, just a few months before he died, we had a family reunion. To show you how sizable this family was, there were 155 people there. Mark used to come to Atlanta to visit relatives, even though he grew up in Springfield, Ohio. He went to college at Ohio State and did his training north, his medical school. Mark was a cardiologist, a physician. He went to the University of Chicago for medical school and did internships at Ohio State. While he was at Ohio State, he heard a very well-known cardiologist, Dr. Willis Hurst, speak at Ohio State and he realized that there was cardiology going on in Atlanta and Dr. Hurst was from Emory. Dr. Hurst presented himself as a mentor, and Mark did his fellowship in cardiology here in Atlanta and he just never went back. He never went back after his fellowship, which ended in 1968. He went to near San Francisco [California] to Travis Air Force Base. This is during the war, of course, during the Vietnam War. I am from San Francisco. The bar mitzvahs was so different then. When you think about it, Mark would be 85 years old now. When he was bar mitzvahed 72 years ago, you had your bar mitzvah, some people came over to your house. That was your party. You got a fountain pen, maybe a check. It was a whole different . . . it was a different world. It was very nice to do it that way. Mark was fairly aware of social issues, which probably more than I was, because he was here when Martin Luther King was shot. He was during that period when Bobby Kennedy was killed. His family here was always very involved, very involved in social issues, very involved in politics. His mother’s . . . his great aunt was Ida Levitas, and she was an amazing, amazing human being, leader in the community and arbiter of what was right. She had a strong, strong family ethic. Her sons were Ted Levitas, who was a very well-known paedodontist. Elliott Levitas is who was a congressman and a lawyer, an attorney. When he was here in his fellowship, he went to her house every Friday night for Shabbat dinner. I think that's when he realized the impact of Jewish observance and family as well, because this was an extraordinary family and a very funny one. Aunt Ida, whatever you said, you liked that first dinner, you got it. The next Friday, you got it the Friday after that. Sometimes it was Jell-O, and sometimes it was Jell-O with bananas, and sometimes . . . but you got that one. “This is the one you like. Chicken wings, right? You don't get drumsticks.” Anyway, another reason that sticks with me is because Mark was a fantastic storyteller. He loved to tell stories about his family, about his patients, about the little idiosyncrasies that he would see in people. He had a darling sense of humor. I've been thinking a lot about joy lately and what brings joy to us. I can honestly say that that man got joy from his patients, his practice, his activities and the things that that pleased him. I'm glad to do that. As far as his medical history, he was a historian, and he was a writer. He practiced medicine in the way that his mentors did, which was bedside medicine. That's harder to do now. It's harder to do when you're typing into a computer the whole time you're talking to a patient, but he would relate to his patients. He cared about his patients very strongly. He also cared about nurses. He was a great champion of nurses because he thought if you trained nurses properly, you would get better patient care. The patient was everything to him. This was not commonly done in the 1960’s and 1970’s, physicians did not respect and train their nurses the way Mark did. They were his colleagues; they were his friends. We did picnics with them. We really had a wonderful time with them, and they were tremendously grateful to him and appreciative, and friends. They were just wonderful friends. Mark was the first full time cardiologist at Piedmont Hospital. He had a unique position because after his fellowship, Dr. Hurst, whom I mentioned, arranged a position for him in which he was a joint professor of medicine at Emory and at Piedmont Hospital. While Emory University Medical School was our employer, Mark worked at Piedmont. His first office was a patient room, and he examined his patients in the bathroom. It was tiny, but he somehow got . . . it worked for him. He started the Fuqua Center of Cardiology, the Heart Institute. He got tremendous reinforcement from mentoring people and from encouraging them to join and be recognized by organizations that he was in, which was the Georgia chapter of the College of Physicians, the Osler Society, which is a medical history society both in England . . . Great Britain and here. He started a form of cardiology . . . he liked to do organized events. He loved to teach. He was an annual teacher for 37 years of the freshman anatomy class. He didn't just give freshman cardiac anatomy, he came out to the stage accompanied by Renaissance music, dressed as Sir William Harvey, who was the discoverer of the circulation of the blood. If he didn’t have beard at the time, he would grow one. It was 1616 again, and he would take out a heart. He says, “Let me show you.” He would point to the heart. I think I even have a picture of that in here. I may have that because he had a whimsy and a sense of humor and a way of connecting with people that was charming. It really was charming. It was very funny. People who had already seen it, students who had already seen the lecture would go back year after year knowing he would do it.
text/plain
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/166035/file/302230#t=684.0,916.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/166035/file/302230/transcript/89631/annotation/27
BAKER: Tell us about your role. The next morning, Bob woke up, went to go to the bathroom, and the memo was taped against the bathroom door. Mark went out to dinner and ordered a baked potato, and it was wrapped in foil and the memorandum, things like this. Bob goes to bed one night and there it is, crumpled up. Mark knew someone in Strom Thurmond's office and had it sent to him. Bob knew someone in the IRS [Internal Revenue Service] and he had the memo sent to him. This went back and forth for 30 years. They teach that to their children and that's a tremendous legacy of mine. They grew up seeing a dad who was working hard, working so hard, but enjoying it. It's funny because Mark loved jazz.
