Thank you for asking me. I was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on April 5, 1943. My father had been classified 4-F, and he was from Chicago [Illinois]. My mother was from Morris, Illinois, and he wanted to do something in the war effort because he couldn't go and fight. He and his father bought a scrap metal business in Fort Dodge, Iowa . . . I was born in Fort Dodge. They moved to Fort Dodge. The funny story of that was that my father was driving one day, a big truck, picking up batteries all over the, wherever he could find batteries to pick up because batteries were needed in the war effort. He's driving down this snowy road and all of a sudden, he sees a tire pass him on the right. He says to himself, “Oh, that poor guy.” Then a few minutes later, a tire passes him on the left and he says, “Oh, that guy is really in trouble.” Then he hears the back of his truck hit the street, so he was the poor guy. I don't know how they got out of that. It was a story he told us many times, but he never said what happened. My Jewish growing up . . . in mostly Skokie [Illinois]. My parents moved to Chicago, but we eventually we moved to Skokie. Everyone that we knew was Jewish. Not all my classmates, but it wasn't a big deal. I just kind of thought that we were like everybody else until I got to college . . . I went to University of Iowa. My freshman year I had two roommates. One was from Muscatine, Iowa, and the other, this was in 1961, was the daughter of a Nazi and we got along great. We really were close friends. We did things together. We even lit all the Hanukkah candles together that year. Then Sigrid invited me to come to her home to decorate their Christmas tree because when they had come from Germany, they brought all the German candles that bubbled up and whatever [that] you put on the Christmas tree. I didn't think anything of it, of course I was going to go and help her decorate the tree. Then she called, and she said, “It'll be very uncomfortable if you come. My father will be very uncomfortable.” I never went, and I don't think we ever spoke again. We did probably speak again because that April, [Adolf] Eichmann was executed, and the University of Iowa daily paper had "Eichmann Executed" as the headline. Sigrid left early in the morning, and the paper was at the door, and she came in and she started screaming at me, “Look what you did.” That's, I think, that's the day I became a Jew. I was raised Jewish, but it never . . . it wasn't traumatic. I didn't have to think about it at all. It was just who I was. But that really changed my view of a lot of things was that that particular day, and I have never spoken to her since. I hear from Marilyn every other year, but never from Sigrid. That's okay. That's just fine. I don't know what happened to her.
text/plain
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=43.0,288.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/3
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=288.0,291.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/4
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=291.0,293.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/5
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=293.0,294.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/6
WINNER: I wasn't sophisticated enough to for it to be really traumatic. I needed adult conversation and adult things. I sought out Brandies, Brandeis Women's Committee. At the time, Dot Cohen was president, and she thought I could work a camera, so I was the photographer . . . I learned a lot about the community from Dot and from the book sale the day, the big tent book sale that Brandeis always had. Eventually I was president of that chapter. Eventually I was a national vice president of the women's committee and went for, I guess until Amy was ten. I went three or four times a year to Boston [Massachusetts] and did what women on the board did. We made decisions. It was great, and at sort of during that time, I decided I needed a business, and someone was going out of business, a man in a gift shop. I bought his books and started selling stationery. That was fun. I did that for quite a while. Then I ran into, I got a phone call from someone who wanted me to sell wedding gowns and not to have them in my shop, not to have a shop, to be able to sell them for my home at a discount. I did that for 18 years. But during that time, Rabbi Goodman, Rabbi Arnold Goodman saw me in the synagogue and came over and said, “You're just the woman I'm looking for. You teach people how to raise money at the book sale. Then you teach them how to give that money to charity, and nobody seems to be fighting with you. I think you can do a job that I have for you. I want you to become a Jewish bridal consultant.” I said to him, “No, I can't do that.” I said, “Jon's a pediatrician. He works on weekends. I don't want to be working on weekends.” He said, “Just a minute.” He went back into his office and brought out a stack of books. He said, “You read. When you’re finished reading, we'll talk.” I went home that day, and I called Alvin Sugarman and I said, “This is what Rabbi Goodman told me to do.” He said, “Oh, that's brilliant. You'd be fabulous.” Thirty years later, I finally stopped marrying people or putting them together, putting the wedding together. It was a lot of fun.
text/plain
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=673.0,851.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/31
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=851.0,855.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/32
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=855.0,860.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/33
LEVINE: Wow. One of the, I'm coming to this, one of the sermons that Rabbi Goodman gave that I remember very clearly was talking about people who needed to create an ethical will. He said people always think about the money, the house, the jewelry, but they never think about the ethics of your life and the ethics that you want to pass on to your children. It was through my needlepoint that I came to that. The first thing that I made for everyone in my family, and to date I have made 18 tallit bags and atarah on tallises because I wanted my children to know that that was part of their, part of the things they needed in life, because you need to own a tallis, so you can go into synagogue and be comfortable and be like everybody else. The second thing that I did, I wanted them to know about volunteering. I want my children to understand volunteering. She hired her and I told her what I wanted to do. The chuppah is four panels. Each one is seven feet long and 18 inches high. Today, due to a dear friend of mine who came to my house, but we had not been close friends when Amy was married, that was the first time the chuppah was used. She said to me, “I've never seen your chuppah, can you show me?” I went upstairs and got a suitcase and brought it downstairs. She began screaming at me. She said, “You told me it took you 17 years to do this. Why is it in a suitcase?” I said, “Where else would you put it?” She said, “You would hang it on a wall.” Consequently, Jon and I had it framed, and it hangs on the wall. Fortunately, the person who created the frame was smart enough to realize that if we had done it all in one frame, it would never have come through my front door. My granddaughter Rachel was nine years old. I said I would like to work with children who are 9 or 10 because I kind of knew that age. I was comfortable with that age. It turned out that there were five children that I worked with. Mostly what I did was visit the children, visit their schools, go to court with them. Sometimes I was asked to speak for them as . . . the child's representative because the parents might be fighting about whatever. These were families that were really in trouble. The last child made a huge impact on me. She was an eight-year-old girl, and her mother had married a man, and she had a brother that was not a biological brother. They were half siblings. Then the mother had married a man, and he had a son. He was not kind to this child. She was eight. She was sharp. She was inquisitive, and she was vocal. At one point, he used the cord of a lamp to beat her. She called her grandmother. Blew me away. Grandmother was 45 years old, I think I was close to 60 at this point and told her grandmother that she couldn't live there anymore. The grandmother, who had a five-year-old son of her own, took in all three children. They were taken away from the parents and eventually the parents got back the son and then ran away so that this little girl and her brother stayed with the grandmother and are there to this day . . . She was a sharp enough kid that . . . I know something good is going to happen to her in her life. She was smart. I spend a lot of time volunteering for Jewish causes and loved it. It was time to spread out. Sandy Springs [Georgia] had become a city. There was a group of women, I don't know how many it was in the beginning. The very beginning it was eight, by the time I got there, I think there was about 275 or slightly more than that. They asked me to join. Another friend introduced me and so I joined. They raised money for nonprofits in Sandy Springs who are too small to go to a north side hospital to ask for a donation. Sandy Springs Society raises money to give grants to these small nonprofits. Right up my alley. We raised money during two fundraising events. One is called Elegant Elf. It's a holiday market where people who make or who sell all kinds of holiday gift items will come to Atlanta, rent a table from us, and sell their items. I was the first chairman with a gal named Pam Betz of that event. I think we just had our 12th Elegant Elf this last year. Then I became president of that organization at the time of their 30th anniversary, which leads to a very interesting story. Nobody wanted to do a dinner dance. No man wanted to put on his tuxedo again. No wife did not want another formal gown that she was going to wear one time and never again. I was looking around for an event that was the right information for a 30th anniversary. We went to a Jewish Film Festival movie and there was a movie about Itzhak Perlman. I gave Jon the elbow in the side, and I said, “That’s what we're going to have for our 30th anniversary. I'm going to bring Itzhak Perlman to Atlanta.” He looked at me with very sad eyes and said, “Honey, this is not going to happen.” At the same time that . . . I was president, the City Springs building was being built, and they were building, it has two theaters and it's where the city offices are, but there's also a lot of extra space there. I was working with the planning, the events planner, talking about what we were going to do, how Sandy Springs was going to do things in that building . . . I said, “I've got to have an event for the 30th anniversary and I know what I want.” He said to me, “What do you want?” I said, “I want Itzhak Perlman to come to Atlanta and play a concert.” He said, “Okay, I'll get that done.” I thought, sure you will. But he did. A couple of days later he called me, and he said he has two possible dates in February. One of them was the 19th of February, which the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival had reserved. He put me in touch with Kenny Blank, and Kenny decided he would partner with me. He would give up that as a film night, and he would do an event with Itzhak Perlman. I would have the first act, and he would have the second act. Itzhak Perlman is a very controlling man of the whole day of his performances, and he wanted to hear nothing of this. The key that Kenny Blank had created, he had created an icon account where Itzhak Perlman would receive the Icon Award. In doing that, he used the people he knew all over to talk about Itzhak Perlman during the commercial. He had filmed many people who were friends of Perlman's. Perlman was not on the stage. He was offstage at that point, and he heard his friends talking and he had to come back on stage and all of a sudden, he realizes what's going on. It was a wonderful night. It was just perfect. But in addition to Itzhak Perlman, it brought together for the first time, Sandy Springs Society had a name in the community and, it cost us a lot of money to bring Perlman and we had five sponsors, there were automobile dealerships. The big deal was Atlanta Jewish Film Festival and Sandy Springs Society were partners on that event, which got us in the paper and gave the society the kind of notoriety that they had never been able to get, all by accident. I later found out that the event planner was in his real life or his previous life, he had been a band teacher at one of the local high schools, and every time Perlman came to town, he was strong enough to lift his chair and to get him into the into a car. He was his driver. When I said I wanted Itzhak Perlman, he knew him. He just picked up the phone and called him. I didn't know that until a month after that, after the program.
text/plain
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=1524.0,1897.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/71
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=1897.0,1898.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/transcript/93105/annotation/72
WINNER: Great, it just happened. The party’s leader was Adolf Hitler. Initially, Nazi political strategy focused on anti-big business, anti-bourgeois, and anti-capitalist rhetoric. In the 1930s the party's focus shifted to antisemitic and anti-Marxist themes. Racism was also central to Nazism. The Nazis aimed to unite all Germans as national comrades, whilst excluding those deemed either to be community aliens or of a foreign race. The Nazis sought to improve the stock of the Germanic people through racial purity and eugenics, broad social welfare programs, and a disregard for the value of individual life, which could be sacrificed for the good of the Nazi state and the “Aryan master race.” Following a series of electoral victories, President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Hitler chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. Within two years, Hitler and the Nazis had created a dictatorship. The persecution reached its climax when the party-controlled German state organized the systematic murder of approximately 6,000,000 Jews and 5,000,000 people from the other targeted groups.

text/plain
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=43.0,288.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/annotation_set/2494/annotation/89

Muscatine is a city in and the county seat of Muscatine County, Iowa. In 1977, the National Socialist Party of America (NSPA) had wanted to conduct a demonstration in Chicago. The NSPA was a group that wore swastika armbands and was devoted to inciting racial and religious hatred, primarily against people of the Jewish faith and non-Caucasians. When authorities blocked the NSPA from demonstrating in Chicago, they announced they would march in Skokie. Skokie was a predominantly Jewish suburb and home to many Holocaust survivors. Residents and officials in Skokie attempted to stop the march on the grounds that the NSPA used hated speech. In a controversial decision, the ACLU legally defended the NSPA. In 1978, the courts ruled that the NSPA had the right to demonstrate because, although many considered their ideas offensive, displaying the swastika did not constitute “fighting words,” one of the few reasons free speech can legally be restricted. Therefore, not allowing the NSPA to march would violate the group’s right to free speech. Although the ACLU prevailed in its free speech arguments, the group never marched through Skokie. Instead, just days before the proposed demonstration, the NSPA announced it had agreed to stage a rally at Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago. The Skokie decision was notable as one of the first decisions in what would become an ongoing debate over the constitutionality of limiting hate speech.

text/plain
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081#t=43.0,288.0
https://thebreman.aviaryplatform.com/collections/994/collection_resources/164941/file/300081/annotation_set/2494/annotation/92

Morris Nieman (1894-1945) was born in Lodz, Poland and later immigrated to the United States in 1913.
