He is the youngest child of Harry and Lillian “Lillie” Shemper Sunshine. Philip had three older siblings Irving, Shirley, and Florence. He grew up in Atlanta on Atlanta Avenue. His father, Harry started Sunshine Department Stores, which grew from a horse-drawn peddler’s wagon. Harry opened the first storefront in 1925 and the business grew to six stores.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003ePhilip graduated from Bass High School. He later attended the University of Georgia in Athens, where he was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Beta Gamma Sigma fraternities. In December 1952, he earned his degree in Accounting. While in college, he was in the ROTC and went into the military service after graduating. He was a lieutenant in the US Air Force and attended Air Force Intelligence School.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eAfter his military service, he went to work in the family business. He eventually became the Sunshine Department Stores General Manager and operated the business with his mother and two sisters. Philip developed the Sunshine Plaza on Moreland Avenue,  home to a Sunshine Department Store. The Sunshine Department Stores closed by the 1990s. Philip was active in various community organizations and at Ahavath Achim (AA) synagogue. In 1955, he married Janet Kaminsky and they had three children Paula, Ilene, and Steven and six grandchildren.
